Understand the next step.
New to driving or moving up from your current role? Start with clear answers. Speak to an adviser at any stage.
Before you start
Which licence do I need?
Start with the vehicle and work you want. Class 2 (Category C) covers rigid lorries. Class 1 (C+E) adds heavier trailers. C1 covers vehicles over 3.5 tonnes and up to 7.5 tonnes. Check existing entitlement and restrictions before choosing.
What are D2 and D4 forms?
D2 is the GB application for lorry or bus provisional entitlement. D4 is the medical report, completed by a doctor. Follow the current DVLA instructions. Do not send identity or medical documents through this website.
What happens at the medical?
A doctor completes the D4 report with relevant health and eyesight information. An optician may need to complete the eyesight section. Ask what to bring, whether the eyesight check is included and what the appointment costs. Follow the DVLA instructions after the appointment: the medical alone does not add provisional entitlement. UK HGV does not decide medical fitness.
What does provisional entitlement look like?
Check the category of provisional entitlement on your driving licence record. Do not rely on the colour or appearance of a card. Ask an adviser which category to check.
Can I start if I already have a medical or passed tests?
Tell us what you have completed and when. Your adviser can discuss what may still be needed and what evidence to check. Check before booking duplicate stages.

Training and tests
How long does each stage take?
Medical appointments, licence processing, preparation, lessons and test availability affect your plan. A short block of practical tuition is not the whole process. Tell us your shift pattern and how much notice you need for leave. Ask which dates are confirmed and which are estimates before arranging travel. The timeline guide explains what affects each stage.
What is Module 2?
Module 2 is a common name for the Driver CPC case studies test. It is separate from the multiple-choice and hazard-perception tests. Your existing qualifications and intended work determine which parts you need.
What if I fail a theory or practical test?
Free retests for all UK HGV customers cover every component of Modules 1 and 2: multiple-choice questions, hazard perception and case studies. Speak to your adviser about preparation and another test. Practical retests and extra tuition are separate; your adviser will explain any costs before you agree.
Is Driver CPC the same as a lorry licence?
No. Vehicle entitlement and professional Driver CPC requirements are different. New, qualified and returning drivers can need different routes. Explain whether you plan to drive professionally in the UK or internationally.

Costs and support
What is included in my package?
Packages differ. Your quote should show the training, tests and support included, the full price, and anything charged separately. Ask us to explain unclear items before booking.
Can I pay monthly or use a payment plan?
Pay in full or ask about a payment plan provided by UK HGV. The schedule and terms depend on your package. Ask for the total and payment dates in writing. No particular monthly amount is promised here.
What happens if my plans change?
Contact UK HGV about your booking. Cancellation, refund, extension and change arrangements depend on the applicable terms and circumstances. Read your quote and booking terms; changes and practical retests may cost extra. Module 1 and 2 retests are free for all UK HGV customers.
What career support do you offer?
Recruitment support is included for every customer who fully passes their course with UK HGV. We offer CV writing support and introductions through 37 recruitment partners. Employers decide on interviews and hiring. Training does not guarantee a job or income.
What if English is not my first language?
Ask us to explain unfamiliar words clearly. Do not assume translated lessons, tests or interpreter services are available. Confirm current test-language rules and support needs before booking.

Your career
What jobs could a new licence lead to?
Depending on your entitlement and employer requirements, explore local deliveries, distribution, long-distance haulage or specialist vehicles. Some roles need further experience or qualifications. Compare the work pattern as well as the vehicle.
What is tramping?
Tramping usually means spending nights away from home during a driving work pattern. Ask employers about hours, rest arrangements, facilities, allowances and time at home.
Can I drive in Europe?
International work has additional requirements. Check the appropriate licence, International Driver CPC and current travel and work requirements. A UK training course alone does not guarantee the right to work abroad.
Can I move into dispatch or start a haulage business?
Driving experience may help you explore transport planning, dispatch or management. These roles have their own requirements. A haulage business has separate business, operator-licensing and compliance obligations; a driving licence alone is not enough.
