How long does HGV training take?
A block of driving lessons is only one part of the journey. Plan for the stages before and after it, especially if you need to arrange time away from work.
Reviewed 21 October 2026. Licensing guidance here concerns Great Britain. Check Northern Ireland requirements separately.
Start with what you have already completed
Your plan should reflect your current licence, medical application, passed tests and intended work. Someone upgrading a licence may need a different plan from a first-time learner. Keep the dates and details of completed stages ready for your adviser.
Ask for any test certificate validity to be checked before arranging later stages. Do not assume an old pass can be used indefinitely.
What affects the time at each stage?
- Medical: appointment availability and any further information needed.
- Provisional application: DVLA processing and any follow-up enquiries.
- Theory: your preparation time and available test appointments.
- Practical training: suitable centre dates, vehicle availability and your learning needs.
- Tests and next steps: test availability, results and any additional training or retests.
These are separate parts of a plan. A course described as a few days of practical training does not mean a few days from your first call to being ready for a job.
Plan around your shifts
Tell us your working days, notice needed for leave, travel limits and whether you can stay away from home. Ask which dates are confirmed and which are still being arranged. Check before committing to travel or accommodation.
UK HGV helps arrange your training and tests across the centre network. Availability still depends on the course and location.
If a stage takes longer
Contact your adviser early if your availability changes or you need another test. Ask how this affects later bookings, payment dates and any extra costs. Changes, extensions and cancellations follow your package and booking terms.
A realistic plan includes time to learn. Do not resign from your current job on the assumption that passing or a new job will happen on a particular date.
