HGV theory, practical tests and retests explained
The test names can sound confusing. Understanding what each part checks will help you prepare and ask for the right support.
Reviewed 21 October 2026. Licensing guidance here concerns Great Britain. Check Northern Ireland requirements separately.
Theory and case studies
Part 1 theory has multiple-choice and hazard-perception tests. These are booked separately. Hazard perception uses video clips to check how you recognise developing dangers.
Part 2, often called Module 2, uses case studies about working as a professional driver. It is separate from Part 1. Ask which tests your existing qualifications and intended work require.
UK HGV has its own theory revision software to help you prepare. Practice results are not an official test pass. Ask how access works for your package and tell your adviser if you need help getting started.
Practical driving and demonstration
Part 3a covers off-road exercises, including reversing and, for a vehicle with a trailer, uncoupling and recoupling. Part 3b covers on-road driving and vehicle safety questions. You must pass Part 3a before taking Part 3b.
Part 4 is a practical demonstration of professional safety skills. It is separate from the driving test and applies where your Driver CPC route requires it. Ask your adviser to name each test included in the quote.
Getting ready for test day
Read the official instructions for your particular test. Check the location, arrival time and documents to bring. For practical tests, confirm who supplies the vehicle and whether the booking includes its use.
Tell your adviser about support needs before booking. Do not assume a test is available in another language or that an interpreter is allowed. Check the official rules for the test you are taking.
What if I do not pass?
Use the examiner feedback or result report to identify what needs work. Speak to your adviser about practice and another test. Free retests for all UK HGV customers cover every component of Modules 1 and 2: multiple-choice questions, hazard perception and case studies. For practical retests, discuss test fees, vehicle use, extra tuition and the next available date before agreeing.
Different tests have different waiting periods and certificate rules. Check the current official page for that test. Free Module 1 and 2 retests do not include practical retests. A failed test may change later bookings.
